About Us

HOW WE CAME TO BE

We are the Older Women’s Network (Qld) Inc.

OWNQ is proud to be part of a national network dedicated to supporting the needs and interests of older women. Since OWN (Australia) was founded in 1985, and OWN (Queensland) followed in 1993, we’ve been a vibrant community focused on empowering women as they navigate the later stages of life.

Fostering friendship & support

OWNQ is a network for older women that promotes friendship, health, and personal growth. Our workshops and information sessions provide knowledge for informed decision-making and healthy lifestyle choices. We offer advice and referrals to service providers, connect women with their communities, and collaborate with organisations that support older women. Over the years, OWNQ has contributed to policy development through submissions aimed at improving social conditions for older women and seniors. We encourage our members to speak up and make a difference. As a non-religious, non-political organisation, we welcome women from all backgrounds.

EMBRACING AGEING WITH POSITIVITY

Women supporting women

While the world has changed since our early days, the key challenges facing older women persist, and new ones have emerged. That is why an organisation led by older women, for older women, is as vital as ever.

An older women’s group is essential for building community, support, and shared understanding among women in similar life stages. It offers a safe space for open conversations about health, relationships, and financial concerns, enabling members to exchange wisdom and resources. These groups promote social connections, reduce feelings of isolation, and encourage active participation in community life. By sharing experiences and fostering friendships, older women can celebrate their strengths and resilience, ensuring they feel valued and heard in society.

OWNQ offers opportunities for women to support one another, explore diverse cultures, and continue learning—all while forming new friendships along the way.

experince, courage & wisdom

Valuing women and what they can offer

Older women are vital to a thriving community. They bring invaluable experience, courage, and wisdom that enhance our decision-making. Their diverse and rich backgrounds offer nuanced perspectives that are essential for developing inclusive social policies and critical services.

Welcoming older women into the conversation benefits everyone and strengthens our society as a whole.

 Life transitions of older women

Women over 50 often go through various life stages and transition:

Menopause and Post-Menopause

Empty Nest Syndrome

Career Changes or Retirement

Health Challenges

Caregiving Responsibilities

Loss and Grief

Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Financial Management

How OWNQ helps support these life transitions

At OWNQ, we are dedicated to supporting older women through meaningful connections and enriching opportunities. Our branches provide:

  • Guest Speakers: Invited speakers from government, local organisations, and service providers offer helpful insights on topics like health, frauds and scams, personal development, life-long learning, retirement, and caregiving.
  • Social Activities: Enjoyable gatherings such as coffee catchups, lunches, movie and theatre outings, book clubs, bowling and picnics in the park (and more.)
  • Peer Support: Our members’ shared experiences create a welcoming environment filled with practical advice, understanding, and encouragement.

Together, these offerings build confidence, create lasting friendships, and form a supportive network of women empowering each other.
