Queensland University of Technology (QUT) PhD researcher, Zane Zhou, is conducting a study that explores how grandparents and older relatives stay connected with their young grandchildren when they live apart, particularly across different time zones. The study aims to understand what time windows, routines, and activities support these relationships, and to identify opportunities for designing technologies that better support distanced family connections.
They are currently inviting grandparents or older relatives who have a grandchild aged 3–8 years living in a different time zone to take part in a short online diary study. Participation involves completing one brief diary form per day for three weeks. Each diary entry takes less than 5 minutes to complete. This study is part of an Australian Research Council-funded project and has been approved by the QUT Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 11017).
